Mississippi Animal Cruelty Cases

Amory, Apr 2009: Indicted murderer arrested in connection of gang related homicide in Illinois in 2005. Upon arrest, 13 badly scarred pit bulls were found on his property. Amory Humane Society secured the dogs, one being euthanized because she was extremely vicious. Man has not been formerly charged in connection with dog fighting and is being extradited back to Illinois.

Pearl, Apr 2009: Twenty-eight animals seized from a couples home in which 24 of the 28 had to be euthanized due to severe sickness. The home and animals were so coated in feces and urine that complaints from neighbors of the odor had been ongoing for about 15 years. Court rulings are pending at this time.

Natchez, Mar 2009: A man ties his dog to a tree, doused it with flammable liquid, and burns it alive. Under the current laws for this horrific crime, he received the maximum sentence of 6 months in jail and a $1000 fine.

Oxford, Aug 2009: A man places his dog on a chain in the back of his truck. The dog jumps out and the man drives off in his truck entangling the dog in the chain. The dog is dragged an undetermined distances ripping the muscles/tendons from the front leg. The dog receives no vet care. Upon rescue, the dog's leg must be amputated and the man receives no consequence.

Batesville, Jun 2008: A mother cat/kittens placed in a duffle bag in 100+ degree temperatures to an area shelter. Mother cat suffered brain damage/blindness with kittens also having heat strokes. Unable to prosecute.

Laurel, Oct 2008: A man allegedly broke into his ex-girlfriend’s garage and killed her two dogs – decapitating one and ripping the other open with a machete. He was charged with misdemeanors for killing the dogs, and a felony for breaking into the garage.

Natchez, Mar 2009: Natchez man pours lighter fluid over his dog and sets it on fire. He is proscecuted with a misdemeanor. After a fine and 6 months in jail, he is now working as a nursing assistant in home health with elderly.

Canton, Jan 2010: Former ACO Officer fired for shooting and illegally dumping 100+ dogs into area creeks. Trial set for fall of 2010 for 5 counts of animal cruelty and 4 counts of illegal dumping. Charges are noted as misdemeanors.
